For most of us, our hair is a huge part of our identity and sets us apart from those around us. Naturally, having sleek and shiny hair is a desire we all have, but without proper hair care, we can end up damaging our beautiful locks.
Made mostly of keratin, hair is the second fastest growing tissue in our body and needs proper handling for it to grow healthy and strong. Here are a few tips you should follow to take care of your luscious locks.
Don’t Wash Your Hair Too Frequently
Contrary to popular belief, washing your hair every day is NOT good for you! In fact, washing your locks every day will deprive it of the natural hair oils. It is recommended to instead wash your hair every three to four days, or even longer, if it’s not super greasy.
Avoid Hot Showers
Hot showers can be very relaxing, but don’t make a habit of showering only in hot water! Doing so can strip your hair of its natural protective oils, making it brittle and dry.
Instead, use a warm to cool temperature for the water and at the end, rinse your hair with cold water. This helps in giving your hair that extra shine and keeping it frizz-free, as the cold water seals the moisture and closes the cuticle.
Use Organic Products
The hair care market is expanding every year, with new products launched for various hair types. The industry has been estimated to be worth 87.73 billion U.S. dollars, but have you ever thought about the gazillion chemicals that are present in your shampoos and conditioners? If used too frequently, these can take a toll on your hair and have quite an adverse effect.
In contrast to the chemical-laden products, organic and natural products are much gentler on your hair. They infuse with your scalp’s skin cells and hair follicles, bringing together a mixture of oils, herbs, and natural minerals which strengthen the hair.
Use a Proper Brushing Technique
Let’s get one thing straight: plastic bristles are not good for your hair! Using them only causes hair breakage or results in static hair.
Brushes with boar bristles, on the other hand, are capable of redistributing the hairs’ natural oils from the roots to the tips. Not only that, but they’re also good for removing dirt and are highly recommended.
Don’t Tie Hair Too Tightly
If you wear your hair in a tight ponytail every day, you might be causing your locks more harm than you think. Having your hair pulled too tightly in a ponytail or braid can cause tensile stress due to the hair follicles being continuously tugged.
If done too often, this can reduce your volume and cause hair loss. Give your hair room to breathe and tie it in a lose pony if you must wear that hairstyle on a regular basis.
Follow a Balanced Diet
There’s no escaping a healthy diet when it comes to taking care of yourself, be it for your internal organs, skin, or hair.
One of the most effective ways of natural hair care is ensuring your intake of food has the right amount of minerals, friendly fats, and antioxidants. This means that you should incorporate plenty of fruits, vegetables, and additional supplements (if needed) in your diet and keep yourself hydrated so that your hair gets the nourishment it needs.
